In this poem the poet has painted the picture of a man who was rich but was not satisfied with what he had. Throughout the day, moon and night he would be thinking of only money and more money. He would go to the Wish-Yielding Tree and pray to grant him a pot of gold.
Only day the God granted him his wish and he was bestowed with seven pitchers of gold coin. All the seven pitchers were filled up to the neck. The wish God had the last laugh on him and he gave him the eighth pitcher too but this pitcher was only half filled.
The rich man after getting the eighth pitcher become sad. He forget about the other seven full vessels. The demon of desire entered into his mind and made him mad.
This desire over took his good reasoning and he totally neglected his mother, wife and children. He stared working till mid night after getting up before sunrise and avoided taking meal, breakfast and everything. He did not have sleep. This totally produced bad effect on his health. He had already bade farewell to his good reasoning. He applied all sorts of tricks to earn money and gold. He became shameless to catch a coin through any method. Ultimately he died one day but he could not at fulfil his desire. He could not manage to fill the pot.
At the end the poet says that greed of a man is endless but the life is not. The end to life is found to come. It is not all wrong if we have limited money with us.
It is only the void in our heart which is killing. Man is never satisfied and that is the curse in life.

इस कविता में कवि ने एक ऐसे व्यक्ति की तस्वीर चित्रित की है जो अमीर था लेकिन उसके पास जो कुछ था उससे संतुष्ट नहीं था। दिन भर, चाँद और रात में वह केवल पैसे और अधिक पैसे के बारे में सोचता रहता। वह विश-यील्डिंग ट्री में जाता और उसे सोने का बर्तन देने की प्रार्थना करता।
केवल दिन भगवान ने उसे अपनी इच्छा दी और उसे सोने के सिक्के के सात घड़े दिए गए। सभी सात घड़े गर्दन तक भरे हुए थे। काश भगवान उस पर अंतिम हंसी होती और उसने उसे आठवां घड़ा भी दिया लेकिन यह घड़ा केवल आधा भरा हुआ था।
आठवां घड़ा पाकर अमीर आदमी दुखी हो गया। वह अन्य सात पूर्ण जहाजों के बारे में भूल जाते हैं। इच्छा के दानव ने उसके मन में प्रवेश किया और उसे पागल कर दिया।
इस इच्छा ने उनके अच्छे तर्क को लिया और उन्होंने अपनी माँ, पत्नी और बच्चों की पूरी तरह से उपेक्षा की। उन्होंने सूर्योदय से पहले उठने के बाद आधी रात तक काम किया और भोजन, नाश्ता और सब कुछ लेने से परहेज किया। उसे नींद नहीं आती थी। इससे उनके स्वास्थ्य पर पूरी तरह से बुरा असर पड़ा। उन्होंने अपने अच्छे तर्क के लिए पहले ही विदाई ले ली थी। उसने पैसा और सोना कमाने के लिए हर तरह के हथकंडे अपनाए। वह किसी भी विधि के माध्यम से एक सिक्का पकड़ने के लिए बेशर्म हो गया। अंततः एक दिन उनकी मृत्यु हो गई लेकिन वह अपनी इच्छा पूरी नहीं कर सके। वह बर्तन भरने का प्रबंधन नहीं कर सकता था।
अंत में कवि कहता है कि मनुष्य का लालच अंतहीन है लेकिन जीवन नहीं है। जीवन का अंत आने के लिए मिला है। यह सब गलत नहीं है अगर हमारे पास सीमित पैसा है।
यह केवल हमारे हृदय में शून्य है जो मार रहा है। मनुष्य कभी संतुष्ट नहीं होता है और यही जीवन में अभिशाप है।
